The Chief of BPS -Statistics of Nagekeo Regency attended the GEDSI (Gender, Disability, Social Inclusion, and Climate Change) Analysis Workshop by the INOVASI Program on 12-13 December 2024 at SDI Danga.
The Innovation Program is a bilateral partnership between the Australian Government and the Government of the Republic of Indonesia which aims to improve student learning outcomes, especially in basic literacy, numeracy, and character skills of students in Grades 1 to 2 of Elementary Schools and Islamic Elementary Schools. This program is implemented in six provinces, namely North Kalimantan, East Java, NTB, NTT, and West Java as well as Maluku.
The INOVASI collaboration has been going on for 8 years, namely Phases I and II, and will continue to Phase III for 2024-2027. In Phase III, in accordance with the agreement with the Government of the Republic of Indonesia, INOVASI has added educational programs with a "gender equality" perspective, disability inclusion, and social inclusion, as well as climate change. These four issues are truly complex, full of context and the strength of local values. Therefore, it is deemed necessary to handle it together across sectors and institutions, both by the Government, Private Sector, and development partners through strengthening the capabilities of the district education ecosystem and education units.
The workshop aims to analyze the conditions of GEDSI in Nagekeo Regency based on 4 quadrants, namely as individuals, families/communities, institutions, and government. Analyze, not find solutions. Why the emphasis on analysis, why not solutions, how important is it to conduct analysis.
To conduct the analysis, we were divided into 4 groups according to the topics above. BPS and Bappelitbangda were in the Disability Group with the Principal of Yohanes Paulus II Elementary School, the Principal of SDI Waemburung, and three mothers from the PK Service.
On the first day we had to introduce our friends and their views on disability. It was a bit awkward because we were with the principal of a famous school in Mbay City, with their respective views. As usual, we always equate the concept of definition. From the discussion, I always direct whether this is a disability or just a matter of parenting that requires a BK (Counseling Guidance) Teacher or trauma that requires a psychologist, not a therapist.
On the second day we showed a photo of a 6-year-old child, with the ability of a 2-year-old. He needs a therapist. We don't have a therapist yet. He has Down syndrome. The desire to abort a fetus is one of the causes of high mental disabilities in society (35 percent). Why do you want to abort, that's the use of analysis, dissecting to the root of the problem.
Discussion of these issues became very sensitive. These four issues are truly complex, full of context and the power of local values. Our thoughts on disabilities became diverse. The understanding based on the Law was opened, it is indeed quite broad. Our metadata does not accommodate that much detail.
When we were stuck and stuck, Mrs. Eni, the facilitator from Innovation in our group, invited us to play sentences. Each person continued their friend's sentence by using the last word mentioned by their friend. We also played to break the deadlock. It's been the umpteenth time we're still fluent, up to the sentence, "People need innovation". There's a friend who continues with "INNOVATION is really cool". Because he was confused and didn't know what sentence to use with the word "Really", finally the friend next to him was forced to continue by saying "Really today". We all burst out laughing. It was a really memorable workshop today. The workshop location at SDI Danga was also really cool. Thank you INNOVATION!
